Fixed and Swivel: Understanding the Types of Locking Caster Wheels

When you are looking to add mobility to an otherwise stationary object, like a cabinet, you need to make sure that you will be able to maintain control while adding mobility. Caster wheels allow for this added functionality, but which caster is right for the job? It depends on your needs and the level of movement you’re after. However, no matter your choice you will likely want a locking wheel.

Fixed Locking Casters

Fixed locking casters will allow you to move a piece in a fixed linear direction, back and forth. While it is possible to turn a unit, having fixed caster wheels in all corners will make this difficult. It is best to use only fixed wheels when you have a predetermined straight path that a piece will not stray from. Fixed looking casters are great at maintaining stability and control, but users will not have the freedom of directional mobility.

Swivel Locking Casters

Swivel locking caster wheels allow a unit to be freely maneuvered in all directions, but these wheels do create some issues with control. For example, have you ever used a shopping cart that has four swivel wheels? Every little bump or dip in a parking lot sends the cart in a different direction. While swivel wheels provide the greatest user mobility, these wheels do not offer significant control or stability.

Combination Sets

The best option when looking into locking caster wheels is to buy them in sets. You should purchase two swivel casters and two fixed casters. Install the two swivels on one side of the piece, and the two fixed on the other. This way, you will have the stability of the fixed casters and the maneuverability of the swivel casters.

Locking casters are an excellent option for adding mobility and functionality to stationary objects. However, it is beneficial to weigh the pros and cons of both fixed and swivel options to ensure that you are satisfied with the result.
